January is Glaucoma Awareness Month!!   Did you know that 2.2 MILLION people have glaucoma?  Did you know that half of those people that have glaucoma do not even know it??  Glaucoma is a "silent" disease - and can cause vision loss without any symptoms.  To learn more about glaucoma, go to Prevent Blindness America - http://www.preventblindness.org/dont-be-caught-sneak-thief-sight If you have a family history of glaucoma you need to have a complete eye exam to determine if you too may have it!!!  Call (205) 975-2020 for an appointment.

January is also Cataract Awareness Month!!  Many people have cataracts, which are caused by many things - age, steroid use, exposure to bright sunlight, and more.  to learn more about cataracts, see the American Academy of Ophthalmology website-http://www.geteyesmart.org/eyesmart/diseases/cataracts.cfm.       If you have cataracts and it affects your activities of daily living, call for an appointment for a cataract evaluation - (205) 975-2020!

MUTI-FOCAL Contact Lens Opportunity:  The UAB Eye Care contact lens department has been designated to be a dispensing site for the new multi-focal contact lens from  CIBA and Vistakon.  The department has already been dispensing ProClear multi-focal contacts from CooperVision.  If you wear contacts, and now need reading glasses for the fine print, talk to our contact lens specialist!  They may have the solution for you, without the need for readers.  For more information, call 975-2020.

Genetic Eye Disease Research
This new initiative by the National Eye Institute (NEI) is designed to assist researchers in studying hereditary eye disease. It will also provide genetic testing for some disorders through qualified practitioners. UAB Eye Care will be participating in this study.
Vision Not Improved By Surgery for Complications of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration and Vitamins (AREDS)
