Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Program Outcomes
The BSN Curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for entry into professional nursing practice. This foundation offers both academic and professional nursing courses that provide the base for clinical competence and informed judgments about health care situations and care of patients in both in and out-patient settings. The curriculum prepares nurses who:
- Apply theoretical and empirical knowledge from nursing, scientific, and humanistic disciplines to make evidence-based practice decisions.
- Participate in quality improvement processes to provide high quality, safe nursing care in a variety of settings.
- Engage in critical inquiry to improve the nursing care of individuals, families, groups, and communities.
- Use information technology and patient data for ethical clinical decision-making.
- Advocate for the healthcare needs of society in a changing economic, demographic, and cultural environment.
- Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills with patients and interprofessional teams to improve healthcare outcomes.
- Provide professional nursing care to individuals and populations that includes health promotion and maintenance, illness care, end-of-life care, restoration, and rehabilitation.
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional nursing values, ethical practice, and life-long learning.
- Demonstrate the ability to independently and collaboratively apply the problem-solving process to facilitate patient, family, and community adaptation to internal and external environmental variables for the purpose of achieving maximum health.

Clinical Experiences
Clinical learning experiences for the BSN program are offered in a variety of agencies in the greater Birmingham Metropolitan Area. As students progress through the various clinical nursing courses offered in the upper division major, they will have clinical rotations through a variety of area hospitals including the UAB Hospital and Children's Health Care System. Each student will have clinical rotations in Adult Medical Surgical areas, Obstetrics, Psychiatric Mental Health facilitates, and Pediatrics. In the final semester, each student will have the opportunity to select an area of concentration for a directed clinical practicum.
BSN Honors Program
Students who desire to enrich their BSN program experience may elect to enroll in the Honor's program. This program assists admitted students to develop additional skills in research or clinical practice in preparation for a career as a professional nurse or develop a foundation for graduate study. (BSN Honor's Program).
