From January 6-26, 2008, 18 nurses from four different Latin American countries (Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Honduras) will be participating in an International Nursing Leadership Institute. The Institute is sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization Collaborating Center on International Nursing and the UAB English Language and Culture Institute. The objectives of this institute are to: 1. Strengthen nursing leadership capacity
2. Enhance child and family health through innovative nursing care delivery programs;
3. Enhance written and spoken English skills to promote leadership development; and
4. Promote ongoing collaboration on projects to strengthen global nursing and health care delivery
The 18 Institute participants will be staying with volunteer host families and they will each be developing projects designed to improve child or family health in their home countries, in collaboration with a UAB nursing faculty member. They will be taking English classes each morning and they will also participate in a course entitled "Global Perspectives on Nursing Leadership" two afternoons each week. This class will be co-taught by Dr. Lynda Harrison in the UAB School of Nursing and by Reina Lidylia Grogan, Director of the School of Nursing at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma of Honduras. Dean Doreen Harper and Dr. Rita Carty, former Director General of the Global Network of WHO Nursing Collaborating Centers, will also present seminars during this class. The class is open to undergraduate or graduate students or to nurses in the community for elective credit.
The Institute participants will be featured speakers at the January 22 meeting of the Nu chapter of the International Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau, International. All are invited to this meeting and a reception to follow. The meeting will be held in the School of Nursing Auditorium from 4:30-6:30 pm.
