The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) awarded UAB School of Nursing, Jacqueline Moss, PhD, RN the prestigious Harriet H. Werley award at the AMIA annual symposium in Chicago in November. The Harriet H. Werley award is given to a nurse who is first author on the paper judged to make the
greatest contribution to advance the field of nursing informatics. Selection is made by a select
committee of the AMIA. Dr. Moss's paper, "An Analysis of Narrative Nursing Documentation in an
Otherwise Structured Intensive Care Clinical Information System" can be found in the proceedings
of the conference (p. 543-547.) Dr. Moss said about receiving the award "I am thrilled to receive
this award from my peers in nursing informatics."
Dr. Moss is the Assistant Dean for Clinical Simulation and Technology for UAB School of Nursing (SON) and NIH funded nursing researcher. Dr. Moss' research and teaching expertise provides strategic guidance to the School of Nursing's reputation as a leader in the use of technology for teaching and learning.
The AMIA award is named after Harriet H. Werley, PhD, RN, FAAN (1914-2002) a pioneer in the area of nursing research and nationally recognized scholar in informatics. Dr. Werley spent 20 years providing leadership in the area of nursing informatics, computer applications, and nursing minimum data sets. She was also the founding editor of the journal, Research in Nursing and Health and Annual Review of Nursing Research.
The AMIA Annual Symposium shares the results of health informatics research, identifies and articulates future needs, nurtures the careers of informaticians, and provides opportunities for developers and users of informatics to meet and learn from one another.
