Chapter History: Current Years (2000 - 2010)
Current Activities & Awards
While attending the National Conference on Undergraduate Research held at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, the UAB Nursing Honor students visited STTI's headquarters. Thanks to Ellen Buckner, Director of the Nursing Honors Program (and member of Nu Chapter's Board of Directors), for arranging this wonderful opportunity to showcase the Society's resources and facilities to future Nu chapter members.
Nu chapter continues to support scholarship and research through the awarding of money. The two recipients of the research awards for 2004 were Wiparat Sangsuwan and Worawan Prachakul, both from Thailand. They were given the money during the Induction ceremony in May by the Chair of the Research and Scholarship Committee, Joe Burrage. Congratulations to both for their successful grantsmanship. The chapter extends a warm welcome to the 53 new chapter members who were inducted and congratulates the new officers who were installed in May 2004 during the Induction ceremony.

At the 37th Biennial International Convention held in Toronto, Canada last November, the chapter received a Chapter Key Award. The Key Award is given in recognition of outstanding chapter activities and member involvement during the biennium. Dr. Kathleen Mikan graciously accepted the award (the Chapter's second) from STTI's Chief Executive Officer, Nancy Dickenson-Hazard and President May Wykle.
Also, at the Convention, a member of Nu Chapter, Karen Morin was elected to the International Board of Directors. Dr. Morin currently lives in Michigan, but maintains a dual membership with Nu chapter. Those members attending the convention from Nu Chapter helped with Karen's campaign. We are proud of Karen and wish her well during her leadership role in the Society.
The Board of Directors recently developed a new program which provides limited financial support to nurse leaders who want to advance selected short-term projects, activities, events, or programs that exemplify nursing leadership. This activity is called the Leadership Grant's program. The first leadership grants were awarded in 2003 to three Nu Chapter members - Sabrina Nuckols, Sandra Donavan (accepted by Tammie Sawyer), Edwina Taylor, and Audrey Oyama. For more details see Leadership Grants. This financially-supported program is in addition to granting of scholarships to students and research grants to researchers.
The Board of Directors continues to meet monthly to plan and implement other chapter activities. The new Board of Directors will assume office beginning July 1. Input and suggestions are always welcome. Please direct any comments or suggestions to one of the officers: STT Nu Board of Directors
Recent Chapter Activities and Honors
This decade has been busy with many new chapter activities, initiatives, and honors. While continuing to recognize superior scholarship and research, the chapter created new fundraising initiatives such as Used Book Sales, silent auctions, end-of-the-year tax-deductible donations, and a Chinese dinner. The money raised from these events was used to support chapter scholarships, research grants, and a new Undergraduate Honors Program. Other new initiatives for the chapter have been publishing chapter articles in the regional Newsletter, developing a leadership grants program, and developing a Chapter Web page.
The Chapter has received several honors recently. On two occasions, the Chapter was given the Chapter Key Award -- one at the 2001 Convention and the other at the 2003 Convention. Other awards for the Chapter Web page were given in 2002. These outstanding achievements were given in recognition of Nu Chapter officers' and members' commitment and contributions to the ideals of the Society. We are proud of the regional and international recognitions that have been bestowed on our chapter in recent years.
A chapter milestone was achieved in 2003 when Nu Chapter celebrated its 45th anniversary. The speaker for the evening was Dr. May Wykle, President of Sigma Theta Tau International. During the dinner, the charter members and past presidents were recognized for their leadership and foresight. A good time was had by all.
Under the leadership of the Board of Directors, the chapter continues to demonstrate that it was committed to improving the chapter's services to its members such as the establishment and maintenance of this Web page. We hope you will continue to visit this site time and time again to learn what is happening and to become involved. We appreciate your support by paying your dues (as this is the major source of funding for our operations, scholarship, and research activities) and hope you will continue your commitment and involvement with Nu Chapter in the future. Please let us know how else we can meet your scholarship, leadership, and research needs.
