Awards and Scholarships

Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, awards scholarship(s) up to $1,000 each year to students enrolled in the University of Alabama School of Nursing, University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as Nu Chapter members attending UAB and other schools of nursing . Awards may be split between candidates depending on the number and quality of the application. The award will be announced at the annual Founder's Day Meeting at the end of the fall semester.
The award of scholarship(s) is consistent with the purposes of the Sigma Theta Tau which are to:
1. Recognize superior achievement.
2. Recognize the development of leadership qualities.
3. Foster high professional standards.
4. Encourage creative work.
5. Strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession.

I. PURPOSE:

The purpose pf the scholarship award is to recognize outstanding academic performance by a scholarship applicant who is pursuing full-time study in the bachelor's, master's, or doctoral programs at The University of Alabama School of Nursing, University of Alabama at Birmingham or other participating schools

II.CRITERIA FOR AWARDING SCHOLARSHIPS
A. Applicants
1. Full-time students enrolled in the bachelor's program in nursing
2. Full-time students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in the master's or doctoral program in nursing.
3. Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for all applicants. For graduate students, a GRE score of 1000 (Quantitative and Verbal) if required for admission to the School of Nursing.
4. In good academic standing at the time of application and remain in good standing in the nursing program.
5. Preference for the award will be given to active Nu Chapter members or active members from other Sigma Theta Tau International chapters. However, membership in Sigma Theta Tau International is not required but is highly recommended.


B. Application materials can be found in the Office of Latonjuia Coach, room NB 101 and are to be submitted to the Sigma Theta Tau Awards Chairperson, Arlene Johnson. Late applications will not be considered.
The following material should be submitted via email:
1. Application form.
2. Written statement of personal and professional goals, leadership experience, scholarly endeavors, and service.
3. Biographical Sketch or Curriculum Vitae.
4. Signed agreement for money usage and access to academic record.
5. A letter of recommendation from a faculty member or one professional associate which address the applicants leadership skills, academic potential, personal and professional qualities, and current or potential contributions to nursing and society.

C. Competitive basis for fund allocation
1. Cumulative grade point average and GRE scores (if required for admission to the School of Nursing).
2. Statement of personal and professional goals, leadership experience, and service.
3. Personal/professional qualities and past, present, and/or potential contribution to nursing and society based upon recommendations and biographical sketch.
4. Scholarship fund budget and number of applicants.

D. Characteristics and conditions of the award
1. Scholarships are awarded for no more than one academic year.
2. The amount of the award will not exceed $1,000/year.
3. The award may be split between candidates depending on the number and quality of the application.
