Each semester, eligible Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing students of the graduating class at UAB are invited to join The Honor Society of Nursing and Nu Chapter. Students who meet the criteria for membership will be contacted by one of the faculty counselors and informed of their eligibility. With the student's permission, contact information will be shared with Sigma Theta Tau International for the purposes of the membership invitation. The official invitation from Sigma Theta Tau International will come in the form of an e-mail which will contains links to the web-site where prospective members can complete the membership application. Once the membership application is complete, the prospective member is officially a member of STT International and Nu Chapter. Membership certificates will be mailed to each new member's home address close to the time of graduation. All graduates from the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters are encouraged to attend the Nu Chapter Annual Induction which takes place each year on the weekend before Spring semester graduation. Your accomplishment of becoming an Honor Society member will be publicly recognized at the Induction ceremony. Family and friends are welcome to join you for this celebration.
The Induction Ceremony of the 2007-2008 academic year will take place at 2 PM on April 27, 2008.
Nurse Leaders are a special category of members in The Honor Society of Nursing and Nu Chapter wants more of them! Nurse Leaders are registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree in nursing or another field who have demonstrated achievement in nursing through education, practice, research, administration, or publication. Some examples of "demonstrated achievement" include creativity or innovation in clinical practice, improvement in the status of a nursing organization, engagement in nursing research and research utilization, and the mentoring of colleagues. We encourage each nurse who did not join Sigma Theta Tau as a nursing student, to consider joining now as a Nurse Leader. Nurse Leaders are asked to complete an application form and submit two endorsement forms for membership. At least one of the endorsement forms must be from an active Sigma Theta Tau member.
Nurse Leaders may submit an application at any time during the year. The Nu Chapter Board of Directors will vote on Nurse Leader applications as they are received throughout the year. Nurse Leaders will be notified that they have been accepted for membership by the Nu Chapter Counselor. After acceptance by the Nu Chapter Board of Directors, the Nurse Leader will receive an electronic invitation from Sigma Theta Tau International with links to the application process The Nurse Leader is officially a member of Sigma Theta Tau and Nu Chapter once he/she has completed the on-line application process. Certificates of membership will be mailed to your home. Nurse Leaders that join throughout each year are invited to the annual Nu Chapter Induction Ceremony in the Spring.
Nurse Leaders who would like to participate in the April 27, 2008 Induction Ceremony should submit their application form and two reference forms to one of the Nu Chapter Counselors (Rebecca Greenwood at rgreenwo@uab.edu or Pam Bowen at pbowen@uab.edu by April 1, 2008.
Nurses who joined Sigma Theta Tau in the past through another Chapter and who are now living and working in the Birmingham area are invited to join Nu Chapter. You may transfer your membership to Nu Chapter by completing a Request to Transfer Membership Form on the Honor Society of Nursing website (www.nursingsociety.org). You can also choose to have a dual membership by completing a Request for Membership in More than One Chapter Form, also located on the Honor Society of Nursing website (www.nursingsociety.org ) in the event that you would like to support the Nu Chapter locally but still retain ties to your alma mater.
