Dr.Shenai graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BS and MSE in Biomedical Engineering. After graduating from medical school at the University of Michigan, he attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he was Chief Resident in Neurological Surgery. He currently serves as a staff neurosurgeon at UAB Hospital.
Dr. Shenai has distinguished himself as a scholar, scientist, and physician. A Goldwater Scholar, he was also named to the USA Today College All American Team and received a Howard Hughes Medical Student fellowship. As a resident, he continued to distinguish himself, winning the 2007 Southern Neurological Society research award, Outstanding Resident and Leadership awards (2010, 2011), and represented the UAB team in its second-place finish in the SANS Resident Challenge competition (2010). Shenai is the first fellow in UAB's accredited Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery program.
Dr.Shenai has broad interests in research and technology, focusing on the cultivation of abstract scientific ideas for widespread application on current practices. His past research interests included bioinstrumentation and signal processing, brain-computer interface and bionanotechnology. His current research interests include DBS optimization for Parkinson disease, surgical virtual and augmented reality, telesurgery, and integration of social media in physician workflow. He has published a cover article in the Journal of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, in addition to other noted publications.
Dr.Shenai's clinical interests focus on functional neurosurgery, including Deep Brain Stimulation and other neuromodulation techniques in the treatment of movement disorders. He also practices general neurosurgery for a variety of intracranial and spinal conditions.
