The division periodically offers or consults on courses related to topics in Neurosurgery and the clinical Neurosciences and we welcome and encourage participation by colleagues. Registration and fee schedules vary and interested parties are recommended to consult the website for the course or contact the coordinating UAB faculty coordinator.
Endoscopic Skull Base Course- this course has been offered twice to UAB Neurosurgery and ENT residents and has incorporated separate didactic and hands on Cadaveric dissection. It is jointly taught by Dr. Riley from Neurosurgery and Dr. Brad Woodworth from ENT at UAB.

Annual Galbraith Research Symposium- Every year in the autumn the division conducts our annual J.Garber Galbraith Symposium. This extended weekend program highlights research presentations summarizing ongoing investigational efforts within the division. Both clinical and basic scientific presentations are conducted by both residents and faculty and our recent graduates give a summary talk of their early years in practice. A visiting professor of national or international renown is invited, attends and presents on a timely topic. We collectively look forward to this weekend as a time to welcome an accomplished surgeon-scientist, learn of our colleagues research accomplishments, welcome our alumni and celebrate their development into fully independent, competent, well trained neurosurgeons. Recent visiting professors have included Nelson Oyesiku, Paul McCormick, Hunt Batjer and James Rutka.
Annual Pediatric Neurology Review Course- Each year the division of Pediatric Neurology conducts an annual course in the springtime that highlights recent topics in clinical neuroscience which there have been recent developments, new controversies or evolving technologies. UAB neurosurgeons often participate in these seminars. Recent topics have included Surgical Treatment of Epilepsy in Children and Therapies for Movement Disorders in Children.
Neurosurgical Society of Alabama Program- The Neurosurgical Society of Alabama meets annually in the spring to discuss recent and timely developments that pertain to the practice of Neurosurgery in the state. A visiting professor of national or international prominence typically spearheads a vigorous academic program for which UAB Neurosurgeons occupy a central role. Recent honored guests have included Gazi Yasargil, Jon Robertson, Kevin Foley and Roberto Heros.
