We welcome medical students from other institutions to experience Neurosurgery at UAB. For those interested in applying for a residency position, a 1 month “acting internship” is very strongly encouraged.
Each 4 week rotation is composed of 1 week assignments to the tumor, vascular, spine and pediatric services. The student will be expected to fully participate in the service, including AM “pre-rounds”, conference, OR, clinic, and other didactic activities. The student will take 6 calls/month, including two weekend calls. During call, the student will be expected to perform an H&P, present cases during rounds, and assist in the operating room. Finally, each student is asked to prepare one 10 minute presentation to be given at the end of the rotation, during an afternoon conference (Mondays, Thursday).
Prerequisites for an externship include: [1] enrollment in an accredited medical school (MD or DO), [2] final year of training at home institution, [3] administrative approval from home institution, [4] a prior neurosurgical rotation at your home institution, and [5] application via the UAB School of Medicine . Additionally, interested students are asked to contact Dr.Riley (koriley@uabmc.edu) directly, 4-6 months in advance of the planned start date.
Due to limitation of resources, visiting student rotations are restricted to students and graduates of U.S. medical schools. Foreign medical students and/or graduates will not be accepted for externships or residency positions, regardless of standing.
Finally, if accepted to participate in an externship, please contact the chief resident 1-2 weeks in advance of the start date, to discuss and plan your rotation. We would like to work with you to provide an optimal educational experience.
