Welcome to the University of Alabama-Birmingham's (UAB) Division of Neurosurgery Web site. We hope this site serves as the gateway to our division for patients, physicians, researchers, students, and the community at large.
Our division strives to achieve a multipurpose mission: world-class patient care with cutting-edge treatments, novel and multidisciplinary research endeavors, and graduate neurosurgical education.
Based in Birmingham, Alabama, we provide adult and pediatric neurosurgical services to Alabama and the southeastern United States. With 13 full-time neurosurgeons on staff, we conduct more than 3,900 operations, including complex cranial and spinal procedures. Many of our neurosurgeons are considered world experts in the treatment of brain tumors, neurovascular conditions, spinal disorders, functional disorders, and pediatric conditions. Our practice is located at the University of Alabama Hospital, The Children's Hospital of Alabama, UAB Highlands, and the Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital.
Our residency training program is amongst the finest in the nation, training the next generation of neurosurgeons. We attract the best medical students and provide broad and comprehensive training, and our alumni are now dispersed across the country. The seven-year, ACGME-accredited program includes one year of protected research and six years of clinical and operative neurosurgery. Residents are actively involved in clinical and basic science research as well.
We hope this site provides you with the information and guidance you are looking for. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best wishes,

James M. Markert M.D., M.P.H.
