EndNote now available for campus
UAB IT is pleased to announce the acquisition of an academic campus-wide (excludes Health System) license for Thomson-Reuters EndNote software. The bibliography software is available at no cost to all faculty, staff and students (academic campus only - excludes Health System) for installation on UAB-owned and home systems. The software can be download from the UAB-IT Software site at http://www.uab.edu/it/software/ .

Mathworks/Matlab site license now available for campus
UAB has acquired a university wide site license for MATLAB and Simulink software. With the exception of the distributed computing server, this license will include all Mathworks Inc. products currently used at UAB. In addition, there will be several new toolboxes and blocksets included in the license. For more information see the Mathworks website provided by UABgrid Computing.
New Products under the Microsoft Campus Agreement
UAB IT has recently expanded the Microsoft Campus Agreement to include subscriptions to several additional products. Under the agreement UAB can now run unlimited instances on-campus of Microsoft Windows Server, BizTalk, System Center Configuration Manager, SQL Server, and Desktop Optimization Pack at no additional cost. All faculty/staff/students continue to have access to the Microsoft Office desktop products such as Excel, Word, Publisher, and Outlook for both campus and home-use. UAB must renew the subscription agreement annually to allow continued use of the products. Adobe Home-use Products Now Available at a Discount to Faculty, Staff and Students
UAB IT has announced a new offering under the existing agreement with Adobe that provides discounts on Adobe products for use on personally-owned systems for all faculty, staff, and students. A limited number of Adobe products are available for purchase and immediate delivery under the home-use program at the UAB Barnes & Noble Bookstore and a larger selection is available online through CDW-G. Purchase of the home-use products are only for installation on personally-owned systems and may not be installed on UAB-owned systems. Microsoft Word/Office Suite Injunction
Microsoft announced, on January 2, 2010, requirements related to MS Word and MS Office licenses pursuant to the recent US Court of Appeals ruling.
Essentially, existing deployments or planned deployments of the products which were purchased prior to January 1, 2010, are not impacted. This applies to UAB as our licenses are covered under an existing campus agreement executed prior to January 1, 2010. Once we execute a new campus agreement (summer 2010) any future deployments will require the newer versions that Microsoft is making available. UAB will make the new versions available on the IT software download site later in January. Currently deployed versions may continue to be used with no updates being required even after a new campus agreement goes into effect.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
By installing the Compatibility Pack wtih Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007. This is a free download from Microsoft.
