Windows 7 is now available to TIMGroup members for testing. UAB's Microsoft Campus Agreement will entitle us to the ultimate version.
While Microsoft promotes a number of enhancements, including security and user interface, there are numerous issues that complicate the introduction and deployment of Windows 7 in such a diverse environment as UAB. One concern is IE8 that installs under Windows 7, which a number of applications at UAB have not yet been certified by the manufacturer. Until more information is available from user testing, it is strongly recommended that departments delay deployment of Windows 7. Information will continue to be provided on this page and through other Information Technology channels as it is available.
Windows 7 will also employ the same licensing model as Windows Vista requiring a 'key server' at UAB to 'authorize' each installation of Vista. Where systems are not connected to the network for long periods of time, an alternate method utilizing a limited-use key will be available but on a restricted basis. UAB IT has set up a key server for testing and is making Windows 7 available to the TIMGroup members for testing within their areas.
