PGP Whole Disk Encryption: Mac OS X Installation Instructions

Article Body

Requirements

NOTE:  Do not encrypt your boot disk if you currently use, or plan to use Bootcamp to run a Windows operating system on your Mac.

To successfully install and configure PGP, you will need the following:

  • Administrative privileges
  • An active connection to the Internet
  • Mac OS X 10.4.x or 10.5.x
  • 512MB RAM
  • 64MB hard disk space
  • Mac OS X 10.4.10 or higher and an Intel Mac to encrypt the Mac OS boot drive

Prepare Your Computer

  1. Back up your data - Prior to downloading or installing any encryption software such as PGP, be sure to back up your data to a trusted source.  Devices such as external drives, CDs, DVDs and network drives are recommended for storage of important documents.  It would also be a good idea to ensure that you have the ability to reinstall any important software if any data loss should actually occur.
  2. Check power and network connections - Before installing, be sure your computer is plugged into a wall outlet and has an active network connection.

Download and Install PGP Software

  1. Go to the UAB Software Library, located at www.uab.edu/it/software.  Locate the PGP software for a Mac and click to begin downloading.
  2. Prior to installation, be sure to close all running programs and save anything you are working on.
  3. Navigate to where you saved the software and launch the PGP installer.
  4. Read the licensing agreement, select "I Accept" and then click Continue until you arrive at the "Installation Type" screen.
  5. Click Install to finish the process.

  6. When you see this screen, PGP is installed and you will need to restart your computer.
  7. When the computer restarts and you log in, you will notice a PGP lock icon at the top of the screen.  This may be disabled as preference, but it is recommended to leave it.  To continue the installation, click the lock icon and select "Open PGP Desktop".
  8. Once PGP starts for the first time, you will be prompted to enroll a username and password with the server.  Please use your BlazerID and password to continue.

  9. If this is the first time that you have installed PGP, or you are unsure of what to do, select "I am a new user", and click Continue, and then Continue on the next screen.

  10.

  11. At this point you will need to provide a passphrase, and confirm it to add a new passphrase user.  This is the password that you will use for most of your configuration changes.  After you click Continue, configuration of your PGP will be complete.
  12.

IMPORTANT!
If you currently use or plan to use Bootcamp to run a Windows OS on your Mac, then you should not encrypt your boot drive (instead you should use virtual disks, filevault, or remove bootcamp prior to encrypting).

1. If you have an Intel Mac and you are running 10.4.10 or later you can open the PGP console and click PGP Disk and then the Encrypt a Disk button near the bottom of the menu.

2. Select the drive you want to encrypt and click Continue.

3. The username field should be populated already, so enter and confirm a password below and click Continue. If your account does not use a password, please set one under System Preferences.

 4. You should receive a confirmation that the drive encryption has started.

5. After a moment you will notice this encryption status page.

6. Adding passphrase users works the same as it does on PC, but in this case you don't have single sign-on so the passphrase user is only necessary to get the computer to boot; you still need to login to the Mac OS.
