* In order to use Windows 2000 on UABWiFi, you must have at least Service Pack 3 installed from Windows updates. The necessary updates can be obtained by clicking the Windows Update icon on the Start menu, or by going directly to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsupdate. Keeping Windows up-to-date with Windows Update is highly recommended.
Windows 2000 users must use the software provided by your wireless card manufacturer. Generally the software will be included in the hardware packaging, however users of older hardware are encouraged to check their product's manufacturer for software and driver updates. Below are instructions and images specifically for certain Ornoco brand of UABWiFi cards. The screen images for your own hardware may look much different, and/or the setup process may be slightly different but the settings for all brands of cards should be similar. If you encounter problems, check any documentation that came with your hardware. The manufacturer's Web site might also be able to provide troubleshooting tips. If you have any questions or comments, please contact our help desk, AskIT, by email or phone at 205-996-5555.

- The Ornoco installation software adds a button in the Control Panel to configure the UABWiFi network. Navigate to the Control Panel, then click on the icon to open the Wireless Network Configuration.

- Select Add to create a setting for UABWiFi. The setting are the same for all on-campus wireless zones; so even if you use UABWiFi in different locations at UAB, you only have to create one configuration for the application to store.

- The UABWiFi Network Configuration consists of mainly three settings. First is to name the Network. Enter UABWiFi in the available space. Make sure the Network Type is set to Access Point.

- Next enter in the WEP key. Check next to "hexadecimal" for the WEP key settings. The WEP key can be found online at https://www.uab.edu/it/wireless/secure/. You must have your BlazerID and password to access the Web page. Remember that the WEP key will change at least once per semester, so make sure to check at regular intervals, and update this setting as needed.

- Enable the IP change by checking the box. Close the box by selecting OK.

- The network UABWiFi should now be available in the main menu.

If all the settings have been saved, you should not have to reconfigure your system each time you use UABWiFi. However, remember that the WEP key will change at least once per semester. Check the WEP Key (BlazerID and password required) page often to see if the WEP key has changed.
If any of these settings are not within the manufacturer's software, they might be in the Network and Dial-up Connections page, located in the Control Panel.

Find your hardware connection, and right-click the icon to select Properties from the menu.

Click Configure to open the UABWiFi hardware properties box. Make sure the Network Value is set to Normal IEEE from the menu.
If any of the previous settings were not in your hardware-specific software, they might be found here. In general, most of the other settings are compatible by default with UABWiFi.
When you are ready to connect to the network, open the hardware client application. In this case, the ORNOCO client is found in the task manager in the lower right of the screen. Click on the icon to open the application, and select OK to connect to UABWiFi.

Once a connection is established, all that is left is to authenticate with your Web browser.
