Common Problems with Your Web Site

Article Body
I uploaded my pages, but I can't see them.

Check your URL. It should be:
    http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~alias/pagename.htm
    .
  • Are you substituting your Phonebook ALIAS for the word alias?

  • Have you remembered to include the tilde ~ character?

  • Are you sure you uploaded into your web directory? When you first log in to your account, you must change directories to web (drop down into the folder named web).

  • The www.dpo.uab.edu web server is a UNIX system. UNIX systems differentiate between upper and lower case letters. Therefore, Home.html is not the same filename as home.htm. Windows and Macintosh computers do not make this lower case/upper case distinction.

  • Did you make sure the file had a .htm or .html extension? (Extension = filename ends in those letters, and there is only one dot in the name.

  • Are you looking at a cached version of your old page, instead of looking at your new page? Click your browser's Reload of Refresh buttons, found in the menu along the top of your browser window. Netscape and Internet Explorer keep copies of the web pages you have visited on your PC's hard drive. Why? Because disk cached pages load more quickly from your disk than from a web site on another computer. If you have just made some changes to your page and then uploaded the page keeping the old name, you may well be looking at what is in your cache instead of what you just uploaded. If all else fails, exit your browser and start it up again.
