Why does my laptop connect to the campus network just fine, but then it doesn't work from home?

Why can my laptop see everything on the Internet except UAB?

This problem occurs when you carry your laptop from home to campus or campus to home.

When your laptop has both an ethernet card and a modem card in it (for Windows 95/98 or NT), you need a different setting for each configuration. Each configuration is called a Hardware Profile One configuration instructs your laptop to use the ethernet card for an on-campus connection; a different configuration instructs your laptop to use the dial-up connection through the modem. Windows95/98/NT does not switch automatically between these two configurations.

SOLUTION:

Hold down the Alt-Key and double-click the desktop icon "My Computer" (also accessible from START -- Settings --Control Panel)

In the window named "System Properties", click the "Hardware Profiles" tab

Click the Copy button
Assign a new name for the copy. Here it is called " Second Configuration" but more useful terms would be HOME or OFFICE or NO NETWORK
Now you should see two configurations listed (a).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADDING A DIAL-UP ADAPTER TO A WINDOWS95/98 THAT ALREADY HAS AN ETHERNET CARD

  • Restart the computer. You will be asked once or twice which profile to use. Choose "Home" or whatever name you selected.

  • ALT-double click "My Computer" to open the System Properties window.
  • Click the tab labeled "Device Manager"and

  • Expand the "Network Adapters" icon by clicking the + (plus sign) to it's left.

  • You should see "Dial-Up Adapter"listed, among other things.

  • Highlight Dial-Up Adapter and click the Properties button. Put a check mark in the box associated with the new hardware configuration.

  • Click OK

  • Go to Network adapters and highlight the ethernet card. Click on the Properties button. In the General window there check the "Disable in this hardware profile" box. Uncheck the "Exists in all hardware profiles&qu ot; box. (In Windows 95, you might have to un-check the box next to the new hardware configuration, instead).

  • click OK

  • click OK again

  • Restart your system and choose the new hardware configuration when prompted to do so. Select the first configuration when you are connected to the network, and "Home" when dialing up.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR NT: You can use the "Properties" button to set your HOME configuration to use your dial-up adapter; set your OFFICE configuration to use the network adapter. Once you have more than one hardware profile set, Windows will ask you which one to use, each time you start up.

The configuration at the top of the list will be your default configuration; you can change the order by using the up and down arrows on the right side of the window. Click the Properties button to change settings.
