UAB Graduate School

Animal Subjects in Graduate Research

The UAB Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is required to review and approve all laboratory, classroom or field work involving animals (vertebrates and higher invertebrates) for research, teaching or testing. This includes graduate student involvement with animal work in theses/dissertations, internally or externally funded grant projects, pilot projects, "side projects" and collaborations with non-UAB individuals or institutions.

Additionally, the UAB Graduate School requires documentation of IACUC review and approval for theses/dissertations involving animals (http://main.uab.edu/sites/gradschool/students/currentstudent/95169/). Guidelines for submitting animal use protocols and electronic forms are available at the IACUC web site (http://www.uab.edu/uabra/iacuc).

Please contact the IACUC office (934-7692) if you have any questions regarding the use of animals in graduate student research and/or whether the work involved will require oversight.
