The McNair Scholars Program provides the following benefits to its students, based on eligibility:
- Highly Respected Faculty Members as Mentors
- McNair Scholars will be matched with faculty mentors (based on research interests), and have opportunities to interact with scientists at all levels of training.
- High Quality Research and Scholarly Activities
- McNair Scholars will be required to participate in a paid 10-week summer internship and poster session, present their work to the university community, prepare a paper in the form of an appropriate scientific journal, participate in a weekly series of laboratory visits and presentations by faculty membes to introduce scholars to a broad range of research fields in the sciences and engineering, and participate in departmental seminars.
- Participation in Professional Development Seminars
- McNair Scholars will benefit from seminars such as Scientific Communication; Professional Writing and Publishing in the Sciences; Oral Presentation of Research; Using Computers for Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Scientific Graphics; Successful Interviewing; and more.
- Academic Support and Personal Counseling
- McNair Scholars will be able to take advantage of the following (as needed): tutoring and other types of counseling, student development workshops, and GRE preparation classes.
- Travel
- McNair Scholars will travel to scientific meetings to present their research. Each McNair Scholar will have the opportunity to visit laboratories, scientific facilities, and graduate programs.
