Under the leadership of James Moeser, Ph.D., its ninth chancellor, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill embraced an ambitious vision for the future, to be America's leading public university. Moeser's accomplishments during his eight-year tenure as chancellor included launching the Carolina Covenant, a groundbreaking initiative to make a UNC education possible debt-free for low-income students, and oversight of tremendous growth in faculty research, the development of an academic plan and significant enhancements to undergraduate education. A Texas native, he earned a bachelor of music with honors and master's of music from the University of Texas at Austin. He studied in Berlin and Paris on a Fulbright Scholarship and earned a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1967. In recognition of his leadership in higher education, Moeser was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007. |
