Job Description — Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
The University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a proven and progressive leader to serve as Interim Dean of the newly formed College of Arts and Sciences. The College includes the former schools of Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The School of Education, a distinct unit within the College, will report to the Interim Dean. The new College will have an operating budget of $54 million with approximate enrollment of 6,500 students and 70 degree programs.
The new College will advance UAB's tradition of excellence in providing breakthrough 21st century curricula and learning, scholarship, research and service.
The Interim Dean's primary focus will be to develop a community of scholars who will build upon UAB's record of achievement and excellence through teamwork and innovation. Working with various constituents, the Interim Dean will lead realignment and integration of essential academic, administrative and financial operations for the new College. The Interim Dean will report to the Provost.
Candidates for Interim Dean of this newly established College should possess the following demonstrated capabilities and attributes:
- Leadership in organizational transformation and strategic resource allocation;
- Track record of timely implementation and execution of strategic and operational plans in an environment of teamwork and participatory governance;
- Experience integrating critical academic, administrative and financial operations;
- Track record of successful, multidisciplinary academic program development, faculty and staff professional development, and sound financial management practices;
- Leadership in developing a strong program of scholarship and research;
- Commitment to building consensus among faculty across diverse disciplines;
- Track record of promoting student engagement through advising and career planning/development; and
- Leadership in recruiting diverse faculty and staff.
