UAB Faculty Development

About Us

The Office of the Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs facilitates activities and events that involve faculty. There are approximately 2000 full time regular UAB faculty with primary appointments in twelve schools, the Joint Health Science departments, and two libraries. Faculty activities vary by discipline and include teaching, research and scholarship, service (clinical, university and professional), and administration.

The mission of the Office of the Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs is:

• To provide faculty development opportunities that will allow UAB faculty to excel in teaching, research, administration and service.
• To process, in a timely manner, personnel documents that support faculty recruitment, appointment, promotion, tenure and other actions.

Our goal is to provide a comprehensive faculty development program that meets the needs of UAB faculty at all levels of their careers. We provide programs in the three general areas of teaching and learning, research and scholarship and administrative leadership. We also provide small grants for faculty through the Scholarship of Teaching Program and the Faculty Development Grant Program (in collaboration with the Faculty Senate). The Faculty Enrichment Committee, a university-wide committee, serves in an advisory role to the Associate Provost.

The Office oversees personnel actions that involve faculty including recruitment, appointment, promotion and tenure, center and secondary appointments and termination. We work closely with Human Resources and the Office of Legal Counsel to consultant on personnel issues.

The Office coordinates the university-wide faculty awards programs. We work closely with the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Policies and Procedures Committee to maintain the online UAB Faculty Handbook. In collaboration with Instructional Technology, we coordinate the IDEA student ratings of instruction.

We encourage you to view our website to faculty development opportunities and resources.
