Tips for an Active Holiday Season

Break it Up

During the holiday rush it can be difficult to find time to exercise.  Remember, even a small amount of activity is better than none at all.  If you can’t find time for a full workout, break the time up and fit in smaller bouts of exercise throughout your day.

Here are some ideas for getting exercise in throughout your day.

·         Instead of one long walk, take several 5 to 10 minute walks throughout the day.

·         Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

·         On cold days, go to the mall to walk.

Stretch Daily

The hectic holidays can increase stress and make muscles tight.  Take a few minutes every day to stretch and relax.  Doing simple stretches throughout the day can keep muscles loose and can be done while sitting at work or watching TV.

Find Time to Relax

Taking a few minutes to relax each day can help decrease stress and help you keep things in perspective.  Sit or lie with your eyes closed. Take a deep breath in through your nose and hold for one to two seconds.  Slowly release the breath out through your mouth.  Repeat this for 10 to 15 breaths.

Change Up Your Routine

Remember, working harder can make up for not being able to work longer.  If you only have 20 minutes, walk faster than you normally would, or find a route with hills to climb.

Always remember to have fun with exercise.  Look at the holidays as a time to change up your routine and have fun finding new activities!!
