Health Issues

Your physical and mental health plays a large part in determining your success in college. If there is a health-related concern that is standing between you and your academic progress, then you should address this concern immediately. Below is a list of campus resources that may help you resolve any health-related situations.
Policy on Medical Withdrawal
All students are responsible for adhering to UAB’s academic policies, as published in the UAB Undergraduate Catalog and the current UAB Class Schedule. The Provost may make exceptions to policies. Exceptions will only be made in extraordinary circumstances. Only in cases of serious illness, which precludes a student from attending classes, or a call to active military service can a student qualify under this policy. In such instances, students requesting an exception to policy must provide the cause-specific documentation in order for the request to be considered.
Student Health Services
Student Health Services provides medical services to UAB students who are enrolled in the program. Student Health emphasizes preventative medicine and provides information on medical matters of interest to students. The service maintains a professional relationship with the student and the strictest confidentiality is maintained.
Medical Insurance
Hospitalization and major medical insurance coverage is available at attractive rates to students enrolled in the Student Health Services. Spouses and children of eligible graduate students may also obtain coverage under this policy at a proportionate increase in premium. Students who are already covered by hospitalization insurance that offers coverage equivalent to that in the UAB student hospitalization policy may sign a waiver to this effect and not be required to take the UAB policy. Failure to sign and file a waiver with the Student Health Service will result in automatic coverage with Student Health Service insurance and the student will be billed.
Campus Recreation Center
Designed exclusively for the UAB community, the Campus Recreation Center offers features you won’t find in any other local fitness center. The striking new facility is scoring points and setting standards with its innovative approach to fun and fitness. You can discover everything under one roof at the Campus Recreation including an indoor track, court sports, aquatics, weight and fitness areas, a climbing wall and outdoor recreation, exercise classes, intramural sports, nutrition education and more.
Disability Support Services (DSS)
UAB is committed to making its academic programs and services accessible to students with disabilities. UAB Disability Support Services (DSS) provides a broad array of services and technologies to make the UAB campus—and a UAB education—accessible for everyone. Qualified students with disabilities are protected from discrimination based on their disability, as guaranteed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
