Dr. David Kitchens

Dr. David Kitchens received his Bachelor’s (B.S.) from Samford University here in Birmingham.  He went to medical school (M.D.) at The University of South Alabama in Mobile, and his residency in urology was completed at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Dr. Kitchens completed his fellowship in pediatric urology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.  He has been at Children’s Hospital of Alabama as an Assistant Professor in the section of Pediatric Urology for the past two years.

Services Offered: As a pediatric urologist, Dr. Kitchens' role in the CPODD clinic is to evaluate children who have symptoms related to their urinary tract, most often related to urinary incontinence.  This usually involves performing a detailed history and physical examination, urinalysis, and then the rest of the workup is tailored to what is found during that evaluation.  Sometimes a renal ultrasound is performed to look at the anatomy of the kidneys and bladder, and/or an ultrasound machine is used to look at see how much urine is left over in the bladder after a child urinates (post void residual).  Sometimes urodynamics is performed, which gives an idea of exactly how well the bladder is storing and emptying urine.  The results of these evaluations are used to better treat children who have urinary symptoms secondary to demyelinating diseases.
