FAQs for Undergrads

Q. Who is eligible to declare their major as pre-business?
A. Students entering UAB from high school may declare their major as pre-business. Students transferring from a junior college must have a transfer GPA of 2.0 or above. Current students from other schools within UAB may declare their major as pre-business if their UAB and cumulative GPA are both 2.0 or higher.

Q. When can I actually declare my major?
A. Pre-business students may declare their major after they have completed their 60 hours of core requirements and are meeting both the lower level business GPA requirement (minimum of C earned in each class and a 2.0 average in all attempts of each lower level business class).

Q. If I am a business major, can I have a business minor?
A. School of Business majors may also earn a School of Business minor, with the exception of the minor in Business Administration. The minor must include at least nine semester hours beyond the requirements of the student’s selected business major. The undergraduate advisors can assist School of Business majors in tailoring a School of Business minor. Read more about business minors.

Q. If I am a business major, when can I begin taking my upper level classes?
A. Students who have completed the majority of their core courses, including Business Calculus, may request to take upper level business classes. Students must be meeting all GPA requirements. All requests must be petitioned through the Undergraduate Advising Office in Room 203 of the Business/Engineering Complex. Petitions will be processed on an individual basis by an academic advisor.

Q. If I am a business minor, when can I begin taking my upper level classes?
A. Business minors must complete all lower level business classes before beginning upper level business courses. Requests to take 300/400 level business courses must be petitioned through the Undergraduate Advising Office in room 203 of the BEC. Business minors must petition to take 300/400 level business classes before registration each semester.

Q. If I am a business major, do I have to meet GPA requirements once I begin my upper level classes?
A. Yes, business majors begin a probationary period once they start their 300/400 level classes. Grades are monitored for the first 12 hours (4 classes) of upper level courses to verify that students are maintaining a GPA of 2.0 in that coursework.

Q. What if my GPA falls below a 2.0 while I am in my 12-hour probationary period?
A. If a student is still within his/her probationary period, he/she will first receive a warning letter detailing the number of quality points that the student’s GPA is deficient. If the student is completing his last class within the probationary period and has a GPA that is still below 2.0, the student will be dismissed from the School of Business.

Q. If I am a business major, do I have to have a minor?
A. No, minors are not required by the School of Business.
