Eligibility
To live in student housing, you must be admitted to UAB and be in good standing. “Good standing” means you are not on academic or disciplinary suspension. You must be enrolled for 12 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 9 credit hours as a graduate student each semester. (Summer semester is treated differently.) You will be required to satisfy these eligibility standards throughout the term of your student housing contract, and you must inform UAB Student Housing and Residential Life if your status changes. Freshmen are not allowed to live alone (i.e., in a single or efficiency apartment) except in extreme circumstances.
- Apply for student housing as early as possible to help improve your chances of getting the housing options you want. Please note that current housing residents have priority for the limited number of efficiencies and single rooms available; in order to help us process your application more efficiently, please make sure to select all housing options you would be willing to accept.
- If you are receiving a UAB scholarship or are a member of the UAB Honors Program, you will receive priority in housing assignments one time only as a freshman. To take advantage of this priority, make sure you apply for housing as early as possible.
- Review the housing options listed on this site. Don’t forget to check costs and requirements to make sure you are able to live in the hall of your choice. Then complete a housing application on the Web or on paper.
- If you choose to sign a contract with Student Housing, there are certain community expectations you agree to follow. Below is a link to Student Housing's Residence Hall Handbook which outlines policies and procedures for living in the residence halls. You will be held accountable for these policies, so please review them before you sign your contract.
To have a paper application sent to you by U.S. mail, contact UAB Student Housing and Residential Life.
- You will need to pay $25 with your application for the nonrefundable application fee. After an assignment is made for you, a student housing contract will be mailed to you. A $250.00 prepayment is due with your signed housing contract. Financial aid will not cover your application fee or prepayment.
- If you are completing the online housing application, you must pay with a credit card over UAB’s secure connection. Click the link listed above and follow the instructions.
- If you are completing a paper housing application, follow these payment instructions: If you plan to live in Blazer, Camp, Denman, Hixson, or Rast halls, make a check or money order for $25 (app fee) payable to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. If you plan to live in Blount Hall, make the check or money order for $25 (app fee) payable to Collegiate Housing Foundation.
- If you are using a paper application, send your completed application and appropriate fee to the mailing address for student housing listed at the bottom of this page.
- Upon receipt of your application and fee, you will be placed on the assignment list. Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications from new students entering UAB and transfer students are processed in the order of the date they are received. If your housing preferences are not available, you will be assigned to an available space.
- After a room is assigned to you, you will receive a building assignment and housing contract in the mail. It is very important that you make sure you return your signed housing contract and prepayment by the deadline date listed.
Cancellations and Refunds
To cancel your housing application, you must make a request in writing (not by phone) to UAB Student Housing and Residential Life at the email or mailing address listed at the bottom of this page. In order to receive a refund of your entire prepayment for an upcoming term, your cancellation request must be postmarked prior to July 1 for fall semester, November 1 for spring, and May 1 for summer. If you do not notify Student Housing and Residential Life by the designated date, your entire prepayment will be forfeited. The 25.00 application fee is nonrefundable.
Special Situations
To live in student housing, professional students, interns, residents, and postdoctoral fellows must be verified by their departments. Postdoctoral fellows must have a UAB classification of 20. Married students may live in apartments in Camp or Denman halls if they meet certain eligibility requirements. UAB will require a copy of the marriage license to verify the relationship.
