UAB Peer Mentoring Program for Freshmen
The UAB Peer Mentoring Program will keep first year students connected to the university and supported through their transition to UAB during the time immediately following Goin’ Green New Student Orientation through the end of their first semester. After Orientation, freshmen will be assigned an older student or ‘mentor’ to answer questions and lead thoughtful discussions regarding campus life, student transition and other UAB-related questions.
Peer Mentors will:
- Introduce freshmen to UAB as a diverse community.
- Assist freshmen in understanding academic expectations and opportunities
- Provide resources and support for individual development inside and outside the classroom
- Foster opportunities to make connections and develop relationships with other students, faculty and staff
To accomplish these goals, Peer Mentors should:
- Engage students in meaningful and deliberate conversations through emails, Blackboard and chats.
- Plan occasional meetings and activities to provide ongoing support and guidance through the end of the semester
Want to apply to be a Peer Mentor?
Applications will be available in early Spring 2010.
Are you a FRESHMAN and want to get connected with your Peer Mentor?
All freshmen will be assigned a Peer Mentor during their Goin’ Green New Student Orientation. You will be contacted by your Peer Mentor AFTER Goin’ Green and throughout the rest of the summer by email and through use of Blackboard. Make sure you sign up on Blackboard so that you can be a part of conversations and communications. You will also receive resources and important information about classes, campus involvement and much, much more!
