FAQ

What if I have not chosen a major/school?
If you are undeclared you will be in the Division of Exploratory Studies. You will see on the website that Exploratory Studies has several options for FYE courses. Choose an option that best suits your needs and interests. If you want more time before pursuing a particular interest, you might consider taking an FYE course that matches an academic area you are considering majoring in. If you have chosen a school, but are unsure of your major, you may choose from many school focused FYE courses as well as any freshman learning community. Click on the school you plan to attend to view your options.

What if I have been conditionally admitted?
If you are conditionally admitted, one of the conditions of your admission will be to enroll in University 101. You may take a University 101 course and complete your schedule with core courses that interest you and fit your needs OR you may choose one of the University 101 Learning Communities.

What if I have been admitted into a UAB Honors Program?
If you have been admitted to one of UAB's Honors Programs (Global and Community Leadership, Science and Technology Honors or University-wide Honors), this website is not for you. Each of these honors programs have the FYE objectives incorporated into the curriculum.

What if I have AP credit for English?
There are multiple learning communities that are linked with English Composition II or are not linked with English at all. You can also choose to take a free standing FYE course, such as University 101 or a school focused FYE. If you are not required to take an FYE related to a specific major (business, education, engineering, nursing or theatre) then you should check with an advisor to see what FYE courses are designed for students who already have credit for English Composition I through AP or Dual Enrollment.

Do I have to take an FYE course?
These courses are required for all first year students, so registration in an FYE course is mandatory. We are confident that you will be able to work with your advisor to find an FYE course that suits your needs and interests.

Will taking an FYE course put me behind for graduation?
Absolutely not! This course is required of all freshmen so you will not be “behind” any of your classmates. Furthermore, the options allow you to take core courses that are needed for graduation. The core curriculum is described in the link in the left sidebar. Core curriculum is one of the topics that new freshmen have the most difficulty understanding, so this topic will be revisited by your advisor at orientation as well. You advisor will also work with you to ensure that the FYE you choose fits with your academic plans and goals.

What if I am still confused?
Remember this website is designed to be an introductory guide, but your advisor is there to help you with any questions you may have!! We understand how overwhelming this process is for new first year students, so if you have questions you can always click on the link to the left to contact your advisor.
