UAB

For Parents

Parents, you are probably wondering why First Year Experience (FYE) courses are required for UAB Freshmen and how they will benefit your son or daughter. FYE courses improve student retention by helping to bridge the gap between high school experiences and university expectations. FYE courses also enhance successful progress towards graduation by establishing the foundations for academic achievement and holistic development. We believe that every UAB first year student should share a common foundation for learning, regardless of major or professional goals.

After successful completion of an FYE course, students should be able to:

  • Employ basic academic survival skills
  • Plan their curriculum
  • Articulate the purpose and value of the core curriculum
  • Know about campus policies and resources
  • Exercise personal and academic integrity
  • Know how a healthy lifestyle contributes to academic success
  • Exercise basic skills in time and financial management
  • Establish community building bonds with peers, faculty, and students
  • Participate actively in campus life *Know the shared vision for a UAB graduate
  • Draw connections between classroom experiences and the community of which they are a part
