The core curriculum is an important but easily misunderstood concept. Because of its importance, you will hear a lot about the “Core Curriculum” at Goin’ Green New Student Orientation and you will also work with your advisor each semester to make sure you are meeting core requirements.
Core courses are divided into 4 categories and are required of all students, across the State of Alabama, regardless of major. You have multiple courses to choose from within each category, and you can work with your advisor to find courses that fulfill both core requirements and your interests.
Core Requirements:
Core I: English Composition I and II (6 hours)
Core II: Literature (3 hours), Fine Art (3 hours), Arts and Humanities (6 hours)
Core III: Math (3 hours), Natural Science with Lab (8 hours)
Core IV: History (3 hours), Social and Behavioral Sciences (9 hours)
The majority of the courses you take your first year are core courses. The First Year Experience incorporates core courses into the curriculum to ensure that you stay on track for a timely graduation.
