Opportunities for Jefferson State Community College Students

Connections LogoUAB Connections Program

The UAB Connections program is a great way for students attending Jefferson State Community College to stay "connected" to UAB as they anticipate transferring to UAB.

Students who decide to participate in the UAB Connections program have access to many UAB events and support services, and a UAB staff member keeps office hours on both the Jefferson and Shelby Campuses of Jefferson State to better aid students who want to complete their bachelor's degree at UAB.

"3 Degrees in 5 Years" Criminal Justice Program

UAB offers Jefferson State students the opportunity to earn their Associate's, Bachelor's, and Master's Degrees in Criminal Justice in just five years.  Students planning to pursue the "3 in 5" program in Criminal Justice must follow the Criminal Justice Associate of Arts degree plan at Jefferson State and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and earn a minimum grade of "C" in all prerequisite and Criminal (CRJ) courses taken at Jeff State.  No more than 60 semester hours of credit from Jeff State may be applied toward the Bachelor's Degree at UAB and prerequisite courses taken at Jeff State must be transferable to UAB's undergraduate core curriculum and upper division (300 and 400 level) criminal justice courses.

Students need to apply for transfer admission to UAB in enough time to be admitted before their Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice at Jeff State is completed.  Once admitted to UAB, students must apply to the "3 in 5" program by the conclusion of their first year at UAB.

For more information about the "3 in 5" program, contact the UAB Department of Justice Sciences at (205) 934-2069 or prof@uab.edu

UAB Marching Band

Students enrolled at Jefferson State Community College are eligible to participate as members of the UAB Marching Blazers.  All interested woodwinds, brass, and percussionists as well as colorguard, dancers, and majorette performers are eligible.  Through a cooperative enrollment, students register and receive credit for marching band at Jeff State, and they attend all rehearsals and performances of the Marching Blazers.  The UAB Marching Band performs at all home football games and some away games.  Recent years' trips included Orlando for the University of Central Florida game, New Orleans for the Tulane game, and Memphis.  The band meets as a class, taken for 1-hour credit in the fall, on Monday-Wednesday-Friday from 3:30-5:15 p.m.  In addition, band students are required to report to campus one week prior to the beginning of classes in August in order to learn music and marching fundamentals as well as the first show of the season.  For questions, please contact the UAB Band Office at (205) 975-2263.

Army ROTC

Army ROTC takes no more of your time than other college courses and counts as credit toward your college diploma.  You can take entry level ROTC courses without making any commitment to the military.  In Army ROTC, you'll do stuff that will challenge you both mentally and physically.  As you find yourself rappelling from cliffs or leading your team through various obstacles, you'll develop skills you can use throughout your entire life and career.  Skills like thinking on your feet, taking charge and making smart decisions.  Army ROTC awards two and three-year scholarships to hundreds of students each year, based solely on merit.  Qualify, and you could receive a full scholarship for tuition and educational fees, plus money for books and a monthly allowance to help cover the day-to-day costs of college.
