The UAB Student Alumni Society (SAS) collected 6 large boxes of school supplies during the months of April and May to donate to Haitian schoolchildren through H.I.P.Haiti, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery, Ala. The supplies will be shipped in a large container to Haiti with items collected from other school supply drives and then disbursed to Haitian schools in need of supplies that they lost during the earthquake.
Items collected included: paper, pencils, pens, construction paper, new backpacks, color pencils, markers, glue sticks, binders, folder, safety scissors, rulers, index cards, and chalk.
Collection bins were located in all five resident hall lobbies, the Administration Building, School of Education, Campbell Hall, School of Nursing, Heritage Hall, Arts & Humanities Building, School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Health Professions, Sterne Library, HUC 136, and the Alumni Affairs Office.
About HIPHaiti
Since 2001, H. I. P. founder Anne Jordan-Reynolds has been the primary supporter for the only school in Coco Beach, Haiti, receiving occasional help from friends and organizations in her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama. Help for the school has grown in recent years as word about her work in Haiti has spread, enabling Anne to address other needs within the community of Coco Beach-a village still lacking potable water and a two and a half hour drive from the nearest medical clinic.
In 2008, with the help of her daughter Stephanie, Anne formed the non-profit organization Humanitarians Initiating Progress in Haiti to expand their financial base and give them the means necessary for initiating sustainable projects within the community of Coco Beach and other communities in Haiti's northern region.
