UAB Homecoming Week
September 30th - October 6th
Homecoming week is set for September 30th - October 6th! The Blazers will take on the Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Saturday, October 6th at Legion Field. We look forward to an exciting new season and hope to see many UAB alumni, fans, and friends on campus for all the festivities! Plans are currently underway to make this year's Homecoming a success!
2011 Homecoming Week Highlights
UAB celebrated Homecoming 2011 with the theme "In Every Blazer there's a Fire!" in preparation of UAB's football game against the Houston Cougars. Many UAB alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends came out to take part in over 40 Homecoming events on campus held throughout the week. The UAB National Alumni Society hosted the Building Decoration Competition, the Annual Gurney Derby Race, the Mr. and Ms. UAB 30th Reunion Dinner and the Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition. It was a fun week to be a Blazer!
On Tuesday, Nov. 1st schools and departments across campus decorated their buildings and celebrated Homecoming with faculty, staff and students to earn awards for the Annual Building Decoration Competition. The winners for this year's competition are as follows:
1st Place: School of Engineering
2nd Place: School of Nursing
3rd Place: School of Experiential Learning Scholars Program
4th Place: School of Dentistry
Best Student Participation: School of Medicine

The much-anticipated Annual Gurney Derby was held on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd which is one of the oldest Homecoming traditions on campus. Sixteen teams came out to compete with well-decorated gurneys and spirited costumes. The results are as follows:
1st Place: Mixed Dentition (School of Dentistry)
2nd Place: Too Fast, Too Femurous: The Tibial Drifts (School of Health Professions)
Dead Last: The Burn Unit (School of Medicine)
Best Dressed Gurney: Dead Last (College of Arts & Sciences)
Most Creative Passenger: The Burn Unit (School of Medicine)

Schools and departments showed their Blazer pride by decorating floats and vehicles to be displayed in the annual Homecoming parade. This year's Grand Marshal was Secretary of State, Beth Chapman.

Taking home awards for their creative floats are:
Most Creative Float: School of Health Professions (Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences)
Best Use of the Homecoming Theme on a Float: School of Nursing
Best Display of Blazer Spirit on a Float: School of Health Professions (Dean's Float)
Blazer Village was full of spirited tents and tailgates before this year's Homecoming game against Houston, but receiving honors for their participation and spirit at their tailgates are:
1st Place: School of Nursing
2nd Place: School of Health Professions
For the second year, the National Alumni Society awarded the Best Blazer Spirit award to UAB’s Student Life for their Blazer pride during Homecoming week. Student Life took this honor for their hard work, creativity and all-around Blazer pride!
