UAB Homecoming 2009

UAB Homecoming 2009 was a great success!  On Tuesday, buildings were decorated with this year's Homecoming theme, "Growing through the Decades, Blazing toward Tomorrow," in mind.  This year's winner, the School of Engineering, displayed a timeline of events that have occurred in UAB's 40-year existence while the runner-up, the School of Health Professions's "SHP Kitchen Stadium" had Chef Dean Jones preparing "owl meat" for the judges.

Wednesday's Gurney Derby attracted a large audience as 14 teams competed for 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place awards, the Dead Last Award, Best Dressed Gurney and Most Creative Passenger.  Teams were comprised of schools, student organizations, unaffiliated groups of students, and staff teams.  Taking home 1^st place was SPA I of the School of Health Professions, 2^nd place was PHLAME II of the School of Education, and 3^rd place was Business Time Travelers of the School of Business. 

Not only was Homecoming a big hit with students, faculty, alumni, and community supporters, but it was a hit with the media as well!  The Gurney Derby and other Homecoming events received recognition and footage on Fox 6, ABC 33/40, a Virginia morning news show, and even CNN!  UAB alumna and Fox 6 news anchor Janice Rogers served as the grand marshal of this year's parade and reported a live news broadcast from the parade. 

At the end of the week, the greatest victory was made as the UAB Blazers upset Florida Atlantic University Owls with a final score of 56-29! Be sure to view photos and videos from the week's events below.
