Engineering Zambia School
UAB Engineers Without Borders

The UAB Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (UAB-EWB) has partnered with the non-profit organization SIFAT to build a training center for practical self-help skills and sustainable community development principles in Lusaka, Zambia.

In May of 2009, UAB-EWB traveled to Lusaka, Zambia to conduct a site survey and establish important local contacts within the community. Participants received training in the areas of water purification, sustainable agriculture, adult literacy, food preservation, HIV/AIDS prevention, and proper hygiene just to name a few.  Student and faculty teams from UAB as well as teams from SIFAT plan to travel to Lusaka over the next 2 years to work on this project with an estimated completion date of August 2011.

Yellow BEST robot
2nd Annual Blazer BEST Competition

The UAB School of Engineering hosted its second annual Blazer BEST Robotics Competition in October at Bartow Arena.  The contest matched middle- and high-school student teams from 26 Central Alabama schools and their built-from-scratch robots against each other in a one-day competition.

Blazer BEST, in conjunction with the National BEST Robotics competition, is a non-profit endeavor, providing free materials for teams to develop and build competition robots in the six weeks preceding the Game Day contest. The competition relies on financial support of generous benefactors.  Gifts in any amount help provide students with the BEST experience at no cost.

A huge success, Blazer BEST was attended by nearly 1,000 participants, their family, friends and school supporters. Please contact pgeorge@uab.edu to learn about support for this program or Blazer BEST 2010.
