Jarol Boan Knowles MD, MPH, has a diverse and varied background with regard to clinical nutrition. Dr. Knowles obtained her medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and completed post graduate training and board certification in Internal Medicine at the University of British Columbia. In 1985, she had the opportunity to study clinical nutrition at the University of Chicago, and completed a fellowship in Clinical Nutrition under the guidance of Drs. Irwin Rosenberg, Michael Sitrin and Robert Kushner. After completion of her American Board of Nutrition exams, she worked in the diarrhea lab at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, in Bangkok, Thailand. After 2 years of international work, she returned to Canada where she became Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Nutrition and Food Science Centre and Division of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. In 1992, she joined Mead Johnson Nutritional Group as Director of Adult Clinical Research. In addition to publishing clinical trials, she spearheaded four new product concepts that have subsequently become successful marketed enteral products for Mead Johnson Nutritional Group. In 1995, she enrolled in the Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and completed a Masters of Public Health in 1997. Under the sponsorship of Dr. Steve Zeisel, she co-authored two multimedia puplications in the Nutrition In Medicine Series for the teaching of clinical nutrition in medical school. She maintains an adjunct position and continues to teach clinical nutrition within the Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Presently, Dr. Knowles is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Department of Surgery, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.
