Engineering students finish first in design competition - The 2010 Cupola Senior Design team from the UAB School of Engineering won first place in the national 2010 ASM Materials Education Foundation Undergraduate Design Competition. ASM is the International Materials Information Society. A cupola is a device used for melting iron and other metals at high temperatures. For its winning design, the UAB team received $2,000 and stipends for travel to the Materials Science and Technology Conference in Houston, Oct. 17-21, 2010. The UAB cupola design team members are Stephen Williams, Carolyn Norwood, Theresa O'Fallon and Creighton Tynes from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Alex Noble, Drew Brandenburg and Justin Sansing from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

UAB students to go to Montgomery for National College Colors Day - UAB students will travel to Alabama's Capitol in Montgomery at the end of August to help promote an upcoming national celebration of school spirit and college sports. National College Colors Day, which is Sept. 3, is designed to encourage people across the United States to wear the apparel of their favorite college or university. Observance of College Colors Day, which coincides with the new school year and the kickoff of college athletics, is an effort to advocate higher education through increased public awareness and celebrates the achievement of colleges and universities, acknowledging their fundamental importance. Student representatives from UAB and the UAB mascot, Blaze, will attend a special ceremony with other college and university students and mascots at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, outside the Alabama Capitol, where Gov. Bob Riley will sign a proclamation declaring Sept. 3 as College Colors Day in Alabama. For more information about College Colors Day 2010, visit www.collegecolorsday.com.

Students selected for UAB Experiential Learning Scholars Program - Forty-five students from across Alabama and the nation have been selected for UAB's Experiential Learning Scholars Program for fall 2010. The program offers students an undergraduate education that combines class work with applicable real-life experiences.
