UAB Optometry Student wins student bowl prize - University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry student Andrew Treece was first-place winner of the 2010 Varilux Optometry Student Bowl. The annual quiz-show style event was June 17 in conjunction with the 113th Annual American Optometric Association Congress and 40th Annual American Optometric Student Association meeting in Orlando, Fla. Treece, of Fultondale, Ala., competed against more than 1,200 students and optometry practitioners.

Engineering student selected for Homeland Security scholarship - Aaron Lamplugh, a sophomore student in the UAB School of Engineering, has been selected for a prestigious Department of Homeland Security STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Scholarship. Lamplugh is seeking a degree through the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The scholarship will cover Lamplugh's tuition and fees in his final two years of UAB undergraduate work and includes a five-week summer internship at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in the summer of 2011. Only about 30 STEM Scholarships are granted nationwide each year.

Broadcast journalism student wins Alabama Broadcasters Associate scholarship - UAB senior Trina Boswell has won a $500 scholarship from the Alabama Broadcasters Association (ABA). Boswell is currently interning with the ABA and her ultimate goal is to have her own show.
