BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - As the tragedy in Haiti continues to unfold, many students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have been reminded of the doctors and health professionals portrayed in this year's campus Discussion Book selection, Mountains Beyond Mountain: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder.
The book tells the story of an infectious disease specialist and the founder of Partners in Health, Paul Farmer, who travels to countries like Haiti to bring life-saving tools of modern medicine to the poor.
The Discussion Book is part of UAB's Quality Enhancement Plan and was created as a way to promote civic involvement, respectful dialogue about controversial issues and knowledgeable participation in a global society.
