Campus Conversations Submission Guidelines 2009

Campus Conversations for the 2009 UAB Discussion Book

UAB uses the annual discussion book initiative to promote learning outcomes central to our goals for undergraduate education.  The 2009 Discussion Book, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder, is particularly appropriate for promoting ethics and civic responsibility.  Small group discussions, a monthly Discussion Book Dialogue series, and an online publication of student work Campus Conversations will promote reflection and dialogue on such themes as service to others, the relationship between diversity and health, and America's role in the global community.

Eligibility:

Only original work produced by a UAB student for an experience or course completed during the calendar year 2009 (spring, summer, and fall semesters) is eligible.  Submissions from part-time, full-time, undergraduate, and graduate students are eligible.

Student work must relate to poverty, public health, health disparities, Haiti, social systems and disease, public health policies, philanthropic outreach, the Caribbean, one person making a difference, or other topic relevant to the 2009 UAB Discussion Book.

 Format:

Student work can take multiple forms, including but not limited to essays, research reports, artwork, videos, audio slide shows, creative writing, journals, posters, and photographs.

 Who can submit:

Students are encouraged to submit their own work.  Doing so constitutes their agreement to have their work published online without compensation if their work is selected for inclusion.

Faculty can submit student work completed during the 2009 calendar year but the submission must be accompanied by (1) faculty affirmation or student confirmation that the student work if selected can be published online without compensation and (2) student contact information.

Guidelines for submission:

Send electronically written work, photograph of artwork, or video to jsizemor@uab.edu with subject line "Campus Conversations submission."  Attachments sent without this subject line may be deleted unopened.   Also, send hard copy, DVD, or photograph to Campus Conversations, Office of Core Curriculum Enhancement, AB320, 1530 3rd Ave S. Birmingham, AL 35294-0103 or drop off at AB320.  Both electronic and hard copy must be accompanied by a cover sheet which identifies name and contact information for student, course and name of course instructor if applicable, and the statement "This submission is my own original work completed during the 2009 calendar year.  I understand that, if selected, my work will be posted online and may be featured in UAB publications without compensation to myself."

Submissions will be accepted August 1 - December 10, 2009.

Judges:

The UAB Discussion Book Committee will select the student work to be included in the online Campus Conversations.  Selection criteria include quality, originality, and relevance to the book.

Publication:

Work will be published online during spring 2010.
