Grants

Since skills and knowledge are most likely to be retained if they are taught within contexts meaningful to the student, primary responsibility for reinforcing the targeted competencies shifts from core curriculum courses to discipline-specific courses as students advance through their undergraduate programs of study.  Academic programs (majors) are accountable for reinforcing competencies and introducing the discipline-specific components of the targeted competencies, generally in the sophomore and junior years.  Additionally, degree programs are charged with developing by fall 2009 a senior capstone course or experience that draws together their students’ preceding college experiences and that demonstrates their students’ level of achievement in the targeted core competencies and in program-specific outcomes.

The Office of Core Curriculum Enhancement offers grants to support the development of enhanced instruction in writing, quantitative literacy, and ethics and civic responsibility in mid-curricular courses and in capstone courses or experiences. The $25,000 awarded UAB as part of the Core Commitments grant is earmarked for grant applications that primarily enhance instruction and learning in ethics and civic responsibility in mid-curricular courses and/or capstone courses.  Preference is given to programs that develop sustainable courses and instructional models that can be used as templates by other programs.  Mid-curricular grant applications may be submitted by any FT faculty, whereas applications for capstone development must be submitted by either a department chair or the departmental administrator responsible for oversight of the undergraduate degree program.
