Project Description: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and other NIH funding agencies use the R-25 mechanism to fund education and training programs in cancer prevention and control (CPC). UAB has two funded R-25 training programs: Cancer Research Experience for Students (CaRES) and the Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program (CPCTP). Both have a required longitudinal evaluation component as do other NCI programs funded as an R-25 grant. However, no consensus exists on an evaluation protocol or model for conducting longitudinal follow-up studies involving former CPC trainees. The immediate goal of the proposed CaRES project is to develop such a model through active collaboration with selected CPC faculty/scientists at UAB, NCI and at other academic cancer centers. CaRES trainees will help conceptualize, develop and test a pilot longitudinal assessment model that can be used by individual CPC training programs for follow-up evaluation studies. This first phase will utilize the more than 300 former trainees in the UAB CaRES data base and will likely entail at least one site visit to a collaborating comprehensive cancer center with an established R-25 cancer research training program. We anticipate at least one abstract and publication from the Phase 1 activities that are projected to take 6-8 weeks to complete. At least one paper will be expected from the team for which the trainee will have opportunity to be the first author. One and maybe two CaRES trainees will be involved in 2009 depending on the final scope of work and time commitments and availability of trainees. Once the Phase 1 developmental model is complete, tested and a manuscript prepared, we will then use these results to determine the viability of a possible grant or contract application to NCI for funding to formally test the model in a national study of former trainees who have previously participated in an R-25 short term cancer research training experience. CaRES trainees selected for 2009, if interested, will be invited to participate in this Phase 2 activity as their academic schedule permits. In summary, selected CaRES trainee(s) will have an opportunity to be an active participant in both phases of the study.
Intern's Anticipated Duties:
Duty 1: Complete one site visit to a collaborating comprehensive cancer center with an established R-25 cancer research training program
Duty 2: Help conceptualize, develop and test a pilot longitudinal assessment model that can be used by individual CPC training programs for follow-up evaluation studies
Duty 3: Prepare abstract and publication
Preceptor will provide intern with access to the following: office or desk space, computer and printer, equipment needed to complete the project, supplies needed to complete the project
Likelihood of authoring publications: Very Likely
Background, education, experience, or expertise preferred: Literature Review Skills; Manuscript Preparation
This faculty member has been a CaRES Preceptor for three or more summers.
