Project Description: Chronic exposure of the skin to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been implicated in several skin diseases including the risk of nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancers. Approximately 1.3 million new cases of skin cancers are diagnosed every year in the US. Exposure of skin to UV radiation induces inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA damage and suppression of immune reactions which contribute to the development of skin cancer. The use of those dietary agents or phytochemicals which have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant or DNA repair capability, can protect the skin from adverse effects of solar UV radiation. We are examining the chemopreventive effects of dietary agents, such as green tea polyphenols, grape seed proanthocyanidins, and some other phytochemical, against the photodamaging effect of UV radiation. A new intern can work on these aspects in my research laboratory. More details on the work prospects can be found on the PubMed under my name.
