Project Description: The student will perform literature review searches and synthesize current thinking on the causes of the major cancers such as lung, colon and rectum, breast, cervix, ovary, and prostate. The student will prepare review papers on these topics and also powerpoint presentations that can be used in the cancer epidemiology course to be taught this summer. In addition, the student will help the investigator complete several manuscripts (each of which is already at least 50% complete) on specific cancer epidemiology topics such as reasons for delay in ovarian cancer diagnosis; health effects of smokeless tobacco use; and the changing role of cancer as a cause of death in the United States. The student will be given papers to read on scientific writing and ethics of authorship that should be helpful in preparing the manuscripts for submission to leading professional journals.
Intern's Anticipated Duties:
Duty 1: Perform literature searches and write review papers and powerpoint presentations on cancer causes and prevention
Duty 2: Re-write drafts of several cancer epidemiology manuscripts and re-analyze data in these drafts as needed, so that the manuscripts will be ready to submit for publication
Duty 3: Assist in the submission of the manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
Preceptor will provide intern with access to the following: office or desk space; computer and printer
