Senior Faculty Research Awards

The UAB ADVANCE Senior Faculty Research Award is open to all tenured faculty who hold the rank of associate or full professor within the Schools of Engineering, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social and Behavioral Sciences (ADVANCE Schools). The purpose of this award is to sponsor research in any discipline by women faculty and research or service focused on gender equity by all faculty within the three ADVANCE departments.

Awards may fund research directly related to issues of gender equity in the academy and society, to promote graduate and post-doctoral education for women in science and engineering, and to support research in the area of a faculty member's specialization which will broaden the participation of women in science and engineering.

Award proposals should include:
  • A UAB ADVANCE cover sheet with signatures from the applicant, department chair, and dean;
  • Cover letter indicating willingness to participate in the ADVANCE program and a timeline showing how this proposed activity fits in with your teaching, research, and service for the academic year;
  • Curriculum vita;
  • One- to two-page proposal specifying research design, methodology and outcomes; a one-page budget with budget justification; and
  • A statement from the department chair of support and any matching funds.
Monies from the ADVANCE Senior Faculty Research Award can be used for release time from teaching to conduct research, summer salary, laboratory equipment or office supplies, salary for a research assistant(s), and travel to collections, laboratories, academic conferences, and other ADVANCE institutions for conferences and workshops. All funds are to be used during the award year and a final report will be required. All scholarship resulting from this award must acknowledge support from the UAB ADVANCE program sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
