Junior Faculty Research Awards

The UAB ADVANCE Junior Faculty Research Award is open to all tenure-track faculty who hold the rank of assistant or associate professor within the Schools of Engineering, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences (ADVANCE Schools and the Department of Finance, Economics, Quantitative Methods in the School of Business).

The purpose of this award is to sponsor research in any discipline by women faculty and research or service focused on gender equity by all faculty within the three ADVANCE Schools. Award recipients are expected to use the grant to conduct research within their discipline and to submit research findings for publication. Awardees will be required to present their findings at the UAB ADVANCE Symposium in 2006.

Award proposals should include:
  • A UAB ADVANCE cover sheet with signatures from the applicant, department chair, and dean;
  • Cover letter indicating willingness to participate in the ADVANCE program and a timeline showing how this proposed activity fits in with your teaching, research, and service for the academic year;
  • A curriculum vita;
  • A one- to two-page proposal specifying research design, methodology and outcomes;
  • One-page budget with budget justification; and
  • Statement from the department chair of support and any matching funds.
Monies from the ADVANCE Junior Faculty Research Award can be used for release time from teaching to conduct research, summer salary, laboratory equipment or office supplies, salary for a research assistant(s), and travel to collections, laboratories, or academic conferences. Awardees are also expected to participate in the ADVANCE Faculty Development Workshops on campus. All funds are to be used within the award year and a final report will be required. All scholarship resulting from this award must acknowledge support from the UAB ADVANCE program sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
