**The Bachelor of Science degree in Cytotechnology has been discontinued. The final cohort of students was admitted in Fall of 2010 ** UAB is pleased to offer the graduate program in Cytology (M.S.C.L.S.). For additional information, click here: www.uab.edu/msct
The Cytotechnology program at UAB is the only program of its kind in Alabama. The faculty of UAB's Section of Cytopathology in the Department of Pathology are directly involved in teaching our students and was recently designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Cytopathology. Graduates are employed throughout the United States as cytotechnologists (CTs) in state, federal, private, or hospital-based laboratories. Experienced CTs secure positions in education, research, or management.
Cytotechnology is one of the most successful ways to detecting cancer at an early stage when it can still be cured. CTs assist pathologists by performing microscopic evaluation of cellular samples from organs to detect microorganisms, infectious lesions, cancer, and related diseases.
CTs also perform various specialized techniques used in collecting, preparing, and staining cellular samples. They also issue final diagnostic reports on gynecologic cell samples that are within normal limits and prepare preliminary reports in cases which warrant further evaluation by a pathologist.
Our students are certified in ThinPrep technology by Cytyc Corporation before graduation.
