Students may apply for financial aid if they need assistance in paying for the cost of attendance. They must have been accepted for admission or be presently enrolled at UAB. Students should apply for financial aid several months in advance of their expected date of enrollment at UAB.
Students applying for financial aid are considered for all programs in which they are eligible. Assistance for SHRP students generally takes the form of a combination of grants and loans. The amount of the award is based on the financial need of the student, taking into account the student's total expenses and the family's financial circumstances. A nationally recognized method approved by the federal government is used to analyze the family's financial circumstances.
Students enrolling on less than a full-time basis will only be considered for a reduced amount of aid. Those enrolling on less than a half-time basis are not eligible for aid.
Since many of the aid programs depend on limited funding, students should complete the application process by April 1 for financial aid to be effective for the following fall. To be guaranteed for consideration for any term, completed applications must be on file 45 days before the beginning of the term. Students must reapply for financial aid each academic year.
