The M.S. degree graduate is an advanced-level clinical nutritionist with training in a number of clinical subspecialties. Graduates may function as clinical specialists in acute care centers, outpatient settings, and public health programs and as faculty in undergraduate, internship, or technical dietetic programs.
Credentials Conferred: Diploma The Master of Science degree is awarded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Length of Study: 18-24 months.
Program Entrance Date: Fall semester preferred.

Requirements for Admission Prerequisites: For unconditional acceptance, an applicant:
- must have a B.S. degree in foods and nutrition (or a related area) from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum overall grade point average of B or alternatively computed over the last
60 semester hours of earned credit;
- must have a minimum GRE score of 500 on verbal and 500 on quantitative sections, plus take the GRE Writing Assessment Test; or have a minimum score of 50 on the MAT;
- should be a registered dietitian or registration-eligible with clinical experience, or have a baccalaureate degree from an American Dietetic Association-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics. A nutrition laboratory sciences option is offered to non-dietetics students with strong chemistry backgrounds; and
- If accepted, must complete the UAB medical history questionnaire and physical, provide proof of required immunizations, and receive satisfactory screening by the UAB Medical Center Student Health Service.

Typical Program
The program offers the Plan I (thesis) option only. Candidates for the M.S. degree are expected to complete a minimum of 30 hours of graduate-level coursework and submit and defend thesis research that makes a contribution to the knowledge of clinical nutrition.
Core Requirements
Students are required to take the following courses: BST 601, BST 602, NTR 618, NTR 636 (or equivalent approved by program director), NTR 680, NTR 690, and NTR 699. Additional courses may be selected from departmental offerings as well as from the following emphasis option areas: exercise science, health education, health services administration, public health, and nutrition laboratory sciences.
